They needed extra time to do it, two goals from Patrick Hallinan in quick succession doing the trick after they had equalised three times in the opening 90 minutes.

Villa drew first blood after 20 minutes with United again undone at a set piece, this time to a free header at a corner.

Simon Outram and James Staz combined nicely for Terry Lowe to quickly equalise but Villa restored their lead just before half time.

Manager Marc Walters brought himself on at the break and promptly showed his side how to do it from Joe Whitham’s ball in, dancing past two players and applying a finish.

The hosts went 3-2 up with 10 minutes left but Whitham saved the visitors’ bacon from just inside the area after Gary Fish’s ball in from the right.

Hallinan’s double made it 5-3 but Villa got a fourth to leave United hanging on.
