Halifax Irish Club gained a thrilling 4-3 home win over Golcar United in their opening West Riding County Amateur League match of the season on Saturday.

The West Vale contest, between last season’s third and seventh-placed teams in the Premier, was going firmly the way of the Huddersfield side when they led 3-0 at the break.

Goals from Alex Hallam. Kieron Lawrence and Simon Thompson put them firmly in control.

However, Irish came storming back to snatch a 4-3 win through an Antony Brown hat-trick and a goal from Damian Randall.

Irish are at home again on Wednesday against Overthorpe, who lost 2-1 at home to Steeton in their opener.

Meanwhile, Brighouse Old Boys gained a very creditable 1-1 draw away to Leeds City in their first match of the season in the West Yorkshire League.

Last season’s finishing positions in the top section suggested they would have plenty on their plates and City duly took the lead, although against the run of play.

Lee Williams headed a great chance wide just before the break but the visitors were grateful to him for a goalline clearance and to a fine Jason Hibbert save for keeping City out in the second half.

With almost the last kick of the game, visiting man of the match Luke Johnson scored a superb equaliser. The ball was cleared from a corner to him on the edge of the area and he volleyed home via the post.

Brighouse host Horbury, 4-2 home winners against Shelley on Saturday, at Lightcliffe Academy on Wednesday.
