Ovenden's final success

They got the better of Halifax Sunday League Division One rivals Queens Head by 3-2 at Brighouse Town AFC.

Ovenden had lost 3-1 to Barge in last season’s final but a 6-1 semi-final win over the same foes had raised hopes they could go one better.

And they did just that against Head, who had won the last league meeting between the sides by 6-1.

The first half was very even but finished goalless.

Queens Head made the breakthrough in the first minute of the second half through Remi Allen but that setback brought Ovenden to life and Tom Robinson, Gary Binns and Scott Cartman started to boss the middle of the park.

Robinson set up Ash Scully to equalise and five minutes later Cartman’s bullet header gave Ovenden the lead.

Kyle Tyers’ header with seven minutes left put more daylight between the teams and Head’s second goal came too late to make a difference.

Ovenden secretary Paddy Cooling, who runs the team with Ross Ashcroft and Tyers, said it had been an outstanding effort from the side.

Waiters Arms and Halifax Hammers both won convincingly ahead of their meeting on Thursday which could decided the runners-up spot in the Halifax Sunday League’s Premier Division.

Waiters finished their home campaign with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Hollins Holme.

Waiters were soon on the front foot and James Waggett opened the scoring from winger James Grimble’s audacious back heel.

Hollins went close through James Chadwick but Waiters, with Ash O’Shea and Oliver Brierley in commanding form, pulled clear in the second half.

Grogan doubled the lead with a long-range drive; Colin Maguire scored from range; and substitute Eric Shon teed up Lee Wood to complete the scoring.

Hammers were 6-1 winners away to Lee Mount.

Ahsan Farooq got four of their goals with Lamin Gitteh and Hussain Farooq also on target.

Mount Tabor ensured a disappointing season for bottom side Old Pond finished on a low note by inflicting a 5-2 defeat on their visitors to Natty Lane.

Pond went 2-0 up through Wayne Allert and Hayden Lewis, following a James Symonds knock down.

However, Pond’s veteran strewn side struggled into the second half and Tabor got back into it when a shot struck visiting centre half Andrew Bottomley and went in.

James Mason made it 2-2 from the penalty spot and an Adam Helliwell double and Mason’s second penalty completed the Tabor comeback.

Barge further cemented their place in the middle section’s top three with a 9-0 home success over Triangle.

Following a double figures rout of Ryburn Valley in their previous outing, Matthew Bagshaw’s side kept up the good work with a hat-trick from Sam Halstead and two from man of the match David Woffenden.

Jordan Parnell bagged his third in two games and Andy Salm, Rob Goode and Anthony McManamin also found the back of the net.

The two games in the second division resulted in predictable wins for champions King Cross Park and runners-up Halifax Hammers Reserves.

Park are only one game away from going through their league campaign unbeaten after a 5-3 success away to Top Club Reserves.

Hammers were pushed harder by Halifax Amateurs but came through 3-2.
