Parkin's superb final winner

A missile of a strike by Will Parkin from fully 25 yards gave Shelf FC Reserves a 2-1 win over Flying Dutchman in a highly entertaining Ziggy's Metro Cars Invitation Cup final last night.

Parkin’s shot with just 30 seconds left settled a Shay contest between two evenly-matched Halifax AFL Division Three sides. It was a goal worthy of winning any game.

Both sides made cautious starts but Shelf FC went ahead in the 25th minute when Josh King headed home from a corner.

The lead lasted only two minutes, a shot from Matthew Seekins squirming under the body of Shelf custodian Joe O’Dowd.

The game was becoming more open with both sides having good spells. Nathan Howard and Ryan Seekins were prominent for Dutchman and man of the match Euan Gardiner and Parkin were stand out figures for Shelf.

Dutchman went close when substitute Tom Bellfield’s effort just cleared the bar. At the other end shots rained in from Shelf FC but generally resolute defending from Dutchman kept them at bay.

With penalties looming, Parkin settled matters in front of a decent crowd.

NORTHOWRAM finished their season with a flourish last night, registering an 8-3 win away to Midgley United which could save their Premier Division skins in the Halifax AFL.

They were snapping a seven-game losing streak and collecting three points for the first time since mid-February.

The Rams started the day leading bottom side Illingworth St Mary’s, who have two games left, on goal difference.

Sowerby Bridge beat Hebden Royd Red Star 6-1 in last night’s other Premier game to go second in the table.

Robbie Sinclair scored twice and Brandon Field got the other goal as Illingworth St Mary’s Reserves won 3-0 away to bottom side Calder ‘76 Reserves in Division One.

AFC Crossley’s Reserves gained only a fourth win of the season in Division Two when they beat Greetland Reserves 3-1 at Mason Green. Their goals came from Matthew Clark (two) and Sam Cole.
