Whalley Juniors inspired by England and Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford!
It’s a marathon – not a sprint – for Whalley Juniors.
The youngsters have been hitting the road during lockdown to help raise funds for Fareshare, who partnered with Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford a year ago.
Despite setting a 26.2-mile target and a £100 marker for the six-week challenge, the Under 9s team has surpassed 100 miles and raised more than £700, including Gift Aid.
“We’ve been able to keep the kids active while raising money for a worthwhile cause,” said manager Phil Burgess.
"They've really enjoyed it and it's encouraged them to get off their XBox and get outside. This has kept them motivated.
“I’m very proud of them all. They are a remarkable team of kids!”
The youngsters, who are sponsored by the Aspinall Arms, compete in the Accrington League and train at Roefield Leisure on Fridays between 6-7 p.m.
England international Rashford has been the ambassador of Fareshare since March 2020 and has helped raise enough money to distribute the equivalent of over 9.5 million meals for children and families who might not otherwise eat.
"They've all been inspired by Marcus Rashford so they were keen to get out and complete this challenge," Phil added.
"Things can get a bit stale during lockdown, especially with the shorter days and dark nights, but this has kept them going."
