A day for fightbacks at Mount Skip
More than 20 players took part in the second round of Hebden Bridge Golf Club’s winter league matches.
It was a reasonably pleasant Sunday morning by Mount Skip standards with just a couple of heavy showers and a strong breeze!
Due to the numbers the draw included a two ball and a Calcutta (three ball) in addition to the other four ball matches.
Despite not understanding the scoring system, it did not stop big hitting Jack Earle easily winning the Calcutta match with Des Senior second and Vice-Captain Dave Fisher coming last.
In the two-ball match Gav Brumby made a winning return following an ankle injury, which required surgery. He comfortably beat Graham Boulton 3 & 2.
Other matches of note involved a thrilling four-ball between Sean Frewin and Martyn Astin, who were four up with four to play against Ricky Hutchinson and Paul Elliot.
Hutchinson and Elliot staged a tremendous fight back to win the last four holes with gross birdies.
Revenge was sweet for Andy Hutchinson, who lost heavily to Steve Scholes the previous week.
With partner Jonny Cockroft recovering well from a shoulder injury they thrashed Scholes and club president Brian Coukham 7 and 6.
Gary Earle and his partner Chris Hoyle won the first three holes against Nigel Fielden and Chad Allott but still managed to lose.
Their opponents gradually clawed back the deficit to win two up, leaving Hoyle and Fielden to rue the fact that their putts just would not drop.
Another tremendous comeback came from Lee Amos and Gav Degnan. They were three down at the turn but rallied to beat youngster Sam Scholes and Dave Pickles by winning the last.
The Winter League at Todmorden Golf Club started last Sunday with 16 players turning out. The winner was Peter Borders with 36 points.
