Good point from a tough start - but ladies should have had more
Hebden Royd Ladies.3
HEBDEN Royd Ladies first game was a tough encounter away at Pontefract and their new signings were prominent in the match.
They had a dream start when Hazel Lockwood charged the ball down from the last defender in the first minute and beat the keeper.
New signing Sam Billington looked in control and on 40 minutes her shot went just wide. Jenna Cobham was busy in midfield and her shot before half time was just over the bar.
Hebden started the second half on top and had a number of chances before Rebecca McMahon found Billington and her 22 yard left foot shot left the keeper standing.
A minute later the referee awarded a free kick to the home side judging a deflected tackle as a deliberate back pass.
Pontefract drove the ball across the six-yard box where in pinball fashion it hit numerous legs and ended in the goal.
Hebden were back on top five minutes later. After a corner captain Sara Clegg found the back of the net with a fierce shot.
At 1-3 up Hebden should have won the game but lack of fitness became a factor. In the last 10 minutes Pontefract pushed up front and two shots from close range left new keeper Paula Statham no chance.
A draw was an unfortunate result for Hebden who had most possession within this game. The new look side has plenty of promise and fitness will improve their chances.
