Hebden B’s place in jeopardy as Tod win derby

The survival of Hebden Bridge Chess Club’s B team in the first division of the Calderdale Chess League looks seriously in doubt after Monday night’s home defeat at the Trades Club, Holme Street by local rivals Todmorden A.

The Todmorden side, beefed up by two new members, Mark Hamer and Alan Clarkson on boards 1 and 2, were just too strong for the home club’s second team.

Despite good draws by the Hebden Bridge players on the bottom three boards against players who were on the top three boards at the start of the season, Hebden Bridge B went down by a score of 1½-3½.

The B team must now win their remaining two matches, against strong opposition, if they are to avoid relegation at the end of the season.

The individual results were: P. Olley 0, M. Hamer 1; D. Shapland 0, A. Clarkson 1; A. Leatherbarrow ½, C. Edwards ½; M. Syrett ½, S. Gornall ½; J. Kerrane ½, P. Edwards ½.
