Just under a mile a minute

AN average speed of just under a mile a minute was recorded by Gerry and Sam Marley’s winning pigeon in last Saturday’s Luddenden Foot Homing Society race from Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire.

The pair returned to winning ways when it took their bird two hours and 1.5 minutes to fly the 121 miles, in a South West wind, following the release of 264 birds entered by 15 members at 8.30am.

It was another excellent race for the brothers who took third and fourth as well with only Gerald Radley, of Mytholmroyd, getting in on the act in second place.

However Gerald’s bird took first prize of £31 in the Produce Competition run in conjunction with this race, with Geoff Wilson in 10th taking the runners-up award of £20.

Charlie and Clive Roberts of Pecket Well were fifth, sixth and eighth, which augurs well for this Saturday’s race which is again from Tewkesbury.

- A CLUB record of 423 birds were sent by 13 members of Todmorden Homing Society to Tewkesbury for last Saturday’s race.

Liberated at 8.45am into a south west wind, conditions were right for a fast race with the leading birds expected to average 60 miles per hour.

Birds were spotted flying very high over the town centre approach five minutes before the expected time but one bird was clearly in front and dived down to the loft of Damien and Bill Fleming, with another carrying on to Leach Brothers at Pecket Well, Kevin Thorp at Lydgate taking third.

Todmorden members took the first seven positions in the South East Lancs Federation race, reflecting the very high standard in the club.

Next week’s race is also from Tewkesbury.
