Mini win for young tennis star
A CALDER Valley based youngster has won a Calderdale wide tennis competition.
Nine-year-old Ennis Fearon-Taylor won the under 10 boys mini tennis orange event held at Queens Sports Club, Halifax.
The competition is part of the Slazenger Calderdale Junior Tennis Championships held at the weekend at three venues – Queens, Brooksbank School Sports College, Elland, and Rastrick Tennis Club.
This annual event, sponsored by Slazenger, Calderdale Community Tennis Partnership and Calderdale Council has singles championships events ranging from under-eight to under-18 across all three venues.
The events attracted a range of committed youngsters from across Calderdale with evidence of keen competition in abundance.
In the under 10 boys mini tennis youngsters initially played a round robin format.
Ennis, who lives in Charlestown, Hebden Bridge, and attends St Joseph’s School, Todmorden, played a thrilling semi-final with Richard Vile, winning on a tie break.
In the final he beat Matthew Airey to receive the trophy.
Both finalists also received goodie bags from the sponsors Slazenger.
Ennis plays tennis at Todmorden Tennis club and Queens.
Outside Calderdale, he plays in the mini futures programme at Thongsbridge Tennis club.
It is the second time he has won the singles championship.
Last year he won the under-eight boys mini red competition, which was held then at Brooksbank School Sports College.
