Todmorden Harriers maintained their strong presence at last Sunday’s 31st running of the Stanbury Splash fell race.

They were among 400 competitors bidding to take home the prize of a malt loaf.

The event certainly lived up to its name. The rain that has characterised the winter so far meant that the seven mile senior course and the shorter junior course were tough going.

Both events began in ankle deep mud at the bottom of the quarry before a short climb.

The junior course took in paths round the perimeter of the quarry while the senior route went in the direction of the ruined Withen’s farm and took in the first of two crossings of Sladen Beck.

After climbing out of the valley, there was a loop around the Ponden Kirk valley skyline, including a splash through a swollen stream, before dropping back into the valley and retracing steps to the finish at the cricket club in Penistone County Park.

Laura Sutcliffe was Todmorden’s first senior lady home in 312th with Jane Leonard two places behind.

The club’s first senior male, and also the first V50, was Martin Roberts in 102ndplace in 58.20. Dave Collins was second V50 and Kevin Booth beat Roger Haworth in a good battle, passing each other several times over the last three miles.

Todmorden Harriers juniors were well represented with head coach Ben Crowther on hand.

There were strong performancesfrom Todmorden’s runners in all age categories. It was a first taste of a competitive fell race for some of the juniors.

Senior results: Martin Roberts 102nd in 58.20, Dave Collins 122nd in 60.01, Kevin Booth 178th in 64.27, Roger Haworth 184th in 64.44, Joe Daniels 191st in 65.12, Laura Sutcliffe 312th in 73.12, Jane Leonard 314th in 75.44.
