Scott Waites gets his bid for a second BDO Lakeside World Professional Championship darts title under way tonight.

The 38-year-old plays Willem Mandigers in a match due to start at 9pm.

Waites, a carpenter for Pennine Housing in Calderdale, won the tournament in 2013 but comes into this year’s event under the radar.

He had a shoulder operation early in 2015 and had a low-key year but still managed to win the British Classic, defeating Glen Durrant, and reach a further four finals.

Waites is as 1-4 shot for tonight’s contest against the 26-year-old Dutchman Mandigers, who lost 3-0 to Mark McGeeney in last year’s first round.

Waites, the 11-1 third favourite to win the event, hasn’t got past the second round at Lakeside for the last two years.
