Walsden satisfied with Wood Cup draw

CHAMPIONS Walsden have been drawn away to Radcliffe in the first round of the Central Lancashire League’s 2013 Wood Cup competition.

It is by no means a bad draw for the Scott Street side as Radcliffe finished third from bottom last season and will be playing in the lower of the two new sections this year.

The winners will be at home to Ashton or Milnrow with Milnrow likely to be favourites for that tie having finished third last year with Ashton bottom.

Walsden spokesman Kenny Gale said that while clubs always hoped for a home tie in the first round, his club had to be happy with a trip to a side which struggled last year with the possibility of a home game to follow.

Gale said Radcliffe’s pro in 2012, batsman Phil Hayes, had returned to the amateur ranks with Haslingden and there was uncertainty over whether star bowler Steve Cheetham would continue to play for them.

“They were in a bit of turmoil towards the end of last season,” he said.

Walsden last won the Wood Cup in 2004 when they beat holders Heywood at Milnrow.

Walsden had young Australian batting star Shaun Marsh, son of Geoff, in their ranks at that time but Mark Hooson was man of the match in a low scoring final.

He and Nick Barker saw the side past Heywood’s modest 116 total.

Gale added: “We had not done that well in the cup recently. There are only two major trophies up for grabs so obviously we would like to do well.”
