THE final of the Hollins and Walsden Floodlit Open Pairs competition took place on Saturday night and, despite the weather, a good crowd of spectators turned out to watch some excellent bowling.

The first round saw Paul Holden and Malcolm Turner of Rochdale beat J Helliwell and Jeff Thompson also of Rochdale,

Trevor and Richard Hargreaves, of Keighley got the better of Barry Collinge and Peter Craig from Rochdale,

Michelle and Kevin Tootle of Burnley beat Andy Fielden and Alan Lancaster of Rochdale and Barclay Warrington and Antony Brierley of Rochdale beat Peter Whitaker and John Jelle from Todmorden.

The semi-final winners were Trevor and Richard Hargreaves and Barclay Warrington and Antony Brierley.

After a tough battle in the final the eventual winners of the £120 prize money were Trevor and Richard Hargreaves.

They trailed in the first half of the game, but caught up at the end to win 21-20 in very wet conditions.

Thanks were expressed to everyone who has taken part in this year’s competition – the players, markers, measurers and the spectators who turned up night after night to support the event.

Thanks were also given to kitchen staff and to ground staff who fought to keep the green as playable as possible in the heavy drizzle that had been falling all day, by ‘mopping up’ between rounds with rollers borrowed from the cricket field.
