CARL Hawthorne landed just one of four carp he hooked on the Gasworks stretch of the Rochdale Canal at Todmorden - but weighing just short of 10lbs it was easily enough to take the £110 winner’s purse in Sunday’s penultimate round of the Pennine Winter League.

Frank Szakeley fishing for Todmorden-based Maver North West was second two pegs from the winner with a net of bream for 7lbs edging the man in between them Graham Bateman of Tri-Cast Calder, into third with his bream bag weighing 5lbs 4oz net.

Hebden Bridge-based Derek Greenwood (Maver North West) was fourth with 4lbs 14oz.

Maver North West Red nudged the 200 points despite finishing a disappointing third on the day mark and cannot be beaten while two Trabucco Halifax sides moved into the reckoning for minor money places.
