Steve wins on a calm day

STEVE Ashworth won the Todmorden Angling Society match on the Rochdale Canal at Castleton, which 16 fished in cold, calm weather.

Ashworth caught roach on punch to finish a couple of pounds ahead of Lennie Fosdyke (skimmer bream and roach caught using skimmer bream and caster_. Derek Greenwood was third and Dave Brierley fourth, both cathing roach on punch.

Result: 1, S. Ashworth, 12lb 7oz; 2, L. Fosdyke, 9lb 12oz; 3, D. Greenwood, 5lb 8oz; 4, D. Brierley, 4lb 1oz.

The next open match is on November 21 at Smithy Bridge - ring 0776 9905319 to book on - then on December 5 it is back to Castleton (same number to book on).

The final trophy match of the season was fished by a dozen anglers at Croft and Steve Hamer finished five pounnds of fish clear havinng caught three carp and a bream using ledgered luncheon meat.

Rob McEndry, with small carp and skimmer bream caught using pole and pellet, was second, with Paul Wilkinson third (small carp using pole and worm).

Result: 1, S. Hamer, 25lb; 2, R. McEndry, 20lb 6oz; 3, P. Wilkinson, 11lb 14oz.

The fish of the day was a mirror carp of 8lb caught by the winner. The next trophy match is not until next February 6.

The annual meeting agreed their should be no increase in subs next year. Keep nets will be barred to pleasure anglers for a month after fish stocks are introduced, not two months as previously.

The Grand Christmas Match will be fished on Sunday, December 12, with the draw being made up to 9am at Todmorden Social Club, Halifax Road.

Fishing takes place from 10am to 1pm, with the seniors at Croft and Townhouse and the juniors on a good section of the Rochdale Canal. Entry is £12 all in for seniors and £6 for juniors, with all entries receiving a prize back at the Social Club. The ticket price includes a pie, chips and peas meal. Prizes and trophies will be presented from 3pm to 4pm. Entry is by ticket only, available from secretary Ray Barber or Rochdale Angling, Tight Lines and Mack’s (Burnley).
