Todmorden picked up where they left off last season with victory in Sunday’s Lancashire League opener - their ninth league win on the trot.
They bounced back from Saturday’s LCB Cup defeat at East Lancashire with a 32 run win against Nelson at Seedhill after being bowled out for 147.
Nick Barker hit six fours in top scoring with 62 with Stevie Barker (17) and skipper Simon Newbitt (16) also chipping in.
Pakistani professional Qaiser Abbas then took four for 19 from 21 overs, 15 of which were maidens, as Nelson were dismissed for 115.
At one point Abbas had four for eight after bowling nine successive maidens.
Stevie Barker also took three for 23 with Richard Meade making 30, Stuart Lemon 24 and David Crotty 16 in the Nelson reply.
Captain Newbitt was full of praise for Nick Barker’s innings and felt it was a good win against a side who will be challenging for honours.
Next weekend is Todmorden’s first double header with Accrington away followed by Bacup at home.
“We lost both fixtures last year and having discussed already the importance of a good start know that these two are games we must win,” said Newbitt.
