Two days of glorious sunshine saw Hebden Bridge Rotary Club’s vintage car rally 2013 turn in to a double record breaker.
An unprecedented 10,000 people packed in to Calder Holmes Park over the weekend to enjoy the sight of cars, motorcycles and tractors of yesteryear.
Rain did not hit the area until the rally was virtually over. And organisers believe that a record amount has been raised for local charities and good causes.
Club president Brian Boocock said: “There were more vehicles here on the Sunday than last year and there was a better show on the
“The weather has been very kind – we have been very lucky.
“I think the final figure will be up on last year. That’s going to mean more money for us to distribute back into the community via local charities and good causes.
“The event not only brings thousands of people from outside the town to the show, it also spills out into the town. So it’s also a great event for local businesses.”
On display on the Saturday were classic cars from 1970 to 1992; motorcycles and scooters from 1970 to 1992; Rolls Royce and Bentley cars of any age; replica or kit cars of any age; military vehicles; pre-1972 tractors; pre-1970 registered vehicles and an array of novelty vehicles.
On Sunday, the busier day, there were vintage cars up to 1930; post vintage cars from 1931 to 1939; post war cars 1940 to 1971; motor cycles and scooters up to 1971; commercial vehicles up to 1971; American vehicles up to 1971 and military vehicles. There will be prizes for best in class and the usual Sunday morning scenic run. Any spare space was taken up by food and drink kiosks, stalls, fairground rides and entertainment tents.
Club secretary Neil Croft said: “I would like to thank the people of Hebden Bridge and the Calder Valley, who always turn out to support us. We have local sponsors and we couldn’t do it without them.
“I would also like to thank the Rotary members for their time because they do it on a voluntary basis. We have also had 17 or 18 of our members’ wives helping out and we certainly couldn’t have managed without them.”
