A recording studio in the upper Calder Valley is appealing for the public’s help to launch budding Gary Barlows and enthusiastic Emeli Sandés on the right track to success.

Calder Recordings, based at Top Land Country Business Park, Cragg Road, Mytholmroyd, aims to raise £2,500 to provide free music and production workshops for youth groups and schools in the area.

Studio manager Callum Hall said: “All our time and resources will be given for free but we need to raise £2,500 to cover the overheads to run 20 courses for 100 people.

“This initiative is directly focusing on youth groups within the Calderdale area who would not get a chance to do this kind of thing.

“We are looking for support from both organisations and the general public.

“The funding will help provide music recording, performance and production workshops to inspire 100 young people.

“We want to run completely free music creation and production workshops for young people (13 to 19 year olds) who would not ordinarily have access to a professional studio, its equipment, performance spaces and staff - to compose, perform, record, write and produce music.

“All aspects of the music industry will be covered, which will help demystify and focus future careers.”

Calder Recordings has run free sessions in the past, such as Square Chapel for the Arts ‘Write To Record’ programme in Halifax, Rochdale Council’s ‘Backdoor Project’ and sessions for Calderdale Young Carers Association.

Callum added: “All participants commented on how much they enjoyed them and the knowledge they gained.

“Widening access and improving participation in music production and music making for young people are our primary aim, giving them the confidence, empowerment and key skills to forge their own musical careers.”

If the initial project is successful, the studio aims to keep it running and offer sessions to youth groups, schools and colleges in Calderdale.

A JustGiving page has been set up: for anyone who wants to back the project.
