Ahead of an Open Evening at Lightcliffe Academy on Wednesday, September 28, Executive Principal Paul Cooper has written an open letter to parents about the school’s visions and aims.

At Lightcliffe Academy it is our fundamental belief that all children have an entitlement to high-quality education and, as part of Abbey MAT, we are committed to providing excellent teaching and learning, pastoral care and additional opportunities for our students to enable them to flourish academically, socially, spiritually and emotionally in a supportive and caring environment.

A successful Ofsted inspection in March 2022 recognised the significant improvements that have taken place at Lightcliffe and our students, staff and wider community are proud to be part of our Academy. We are exceptionally proud of our students and, as ambassadors of Lightcliffe Academy, we have high expectations of them.

Through a bespoke and tailored Character Education Programme, “The SHARED Character”, we are committed to ensuring that our students are given opportunities to develop ‘soft skills’ such as perseverance and integrity, so that they are able to sustain success when they leave us and move on to Higher Education or work.

Timetabled Character lessons and leadership opportunities at all levels, alongside a full and broad range of extra-curricular clubs and societies, ensure that this is the case. Our SHARED values underpin everything we do. They make our school a happy place where students feel safe and supported.

Many of our students have tremendous latent abilities and we are passionate about ensuring that we nurture and empower them to reach their full potential. At Lightcliffe we have provided young people and their families with a therapeutic, nurturing, and academically rigorous learning environment.

We have established an outstanding pastoral team which includes Counsellors and a designated Nurture lead, who work alongside Heads of Year to ensure that individual student needs are met.

Our academic curriculum has been revised so that every student is able to build upon the progress they made in primary school. We provide a rich, engaging curriculum that challenges our students and provides a wealth of learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. This, alongside high standards of teaching, enables all students to make good progress from their starting point as they move up the school and onto their post-16 destination. We are proud to say that our 2022 GCSE progress results are our best ever.

We are passionate about providing our students with additional opportunities outside of the classroom and invest heavily in extra-curricular activities and educational visits, and we encourage all students to get involved.

Warm welcome

We would love to see you at our Open Evening on Wednesday 28th September and look forward to showcasing our incredible academy. We would also like to provide you with the opportunity to tour the academy during a normal working school day. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please contact us though [email protected]
