LIVE BLOG: Calderdale Council Q&A on budget proposals

Q: "Cost and subsidy for running The Shay"

JS - "We are committed to finding a good resolution to this."

SD - "Possible to bid for money to implement that so we don't have to bear cost ourselves.

"Not just a money making measure. Hope violations will go down when scheme starts."

BM - "Estimated based on what other similar authorities have been doing."

Q: "Bus lane enforcement proposal - how has projected income been calculated?"

Q: "Why are you looking to implement boundary commission?"

JS - "Commission hasn't ruled on this yet. We'll see what they come out with."

JS - "We have pulled together a reduced cost but still have fantastic plans for it. This year will see those things getting underway."

JS - "Where are our leisure facilities? Referring to Hx Leisure Centre.

"Cabinet discussed halting going ahead with the leisure centre. Scheme became unaffordable due to inflation and we weren't prepared to write a blank cheque. Have gone back to the drawing board and seriously considered whether we should cut it out entirely, which would have saved a lot of money but decided against it as area deserves a state of the art leisure centre."

SD - "When ideas are investigated they often could cost too much or have other consequences. We try to be business like so try to understand how much it costs us to do things and try to keep costs to a minimum."

SD - "We can increase fees and charges and will be looking at that, but we know it's not popular and there are issues about fairness.

"We constantly think about commercial opportunities but its not a council's primary function. We can't get distracted from our core purposes. We can't just make a profit unless we set up separate companies and opportunity to do that aren't there here than in more prosperous boroughs."

SD - "Govt has deliberately sought to reduce level of funding and expects that to be made up by increasing charges/tax.

"Majority of our houses are lowest band so when we raise council tax, we raise far less than council in south of England. So it's difficult to increase our income via council tax, and same for business rates."
