WorldPride Sydney

WorldPride is organised by Interpride, an international organisation for the LGBTQ+ community and the organiser of gay pride around the world. The organisation's goal is to bring together LGBTQ+ members from all over the world and work with existing pride organisers to make them even bigger. In this way, the LGBTQ+ community becomes more visible and more recognised. The first WorldPride took place in Rome in 2000.

In 2023, it will be held in Sydney, the first time it will be organised in Oceania and that is no coincidence. This is also the year that Sydneys Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrates its 45th anniversary, and it has been five years since same-sex marriage became legal in Australia. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras began in 1978 as a celebration of the Stonewall riots, and has grown into one of the largest pride marches in the world today.

Normally, the festival includes the Mardi Gras Parade, Mardi Gras Party and smaller events such as cabaret, plays and comedy shows. In 2023, however, it will be even bigger. Many more communities will participate and the themes on offer will deepen the Pride. In particular, bringing together different groups and cultures in Australia is a key theme under the motto "gather, dream, amplify". The focus will be on the culture and representation of Australia's First Nations, for example at the First Nations gala concert. In addition, the human rights of the LGBTQ+ community will be recognised and discussed during a three-day human rights conference.

Taking place between 17 February and 5 March 2023, the WorldPride is a Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with many more events and themes encompassing the whole of Australian culture and the LGBTQ+ community.
