Two Calderdale towns to lose banks as banking giant announces more branch closures

The banking giant says a shift towards online banking is behind it closing 53 branches across the UK.

They include the Lloyds bank in Brighouse, which will close on October 10, and the Halifax in Todmorden, which will be replaced by a “community banker” from September 28 – a staff member who will provide face-to-face banking services in the area.

For Todmorden, the move will mean the town loses its last bank.

A Lloyds spokesperson said the move had been brought about by its customers increasingly switching to online and mobile banking.

They added: “Alongside our digital and mobile banking options, we’re introducing more community bankers to provide face-to-face banking support in communities.

"All colleagues at these branches will be offered a role at another branch or elsewhere in our business.”

Todmorden town councillors have voiced their concern at the plans and are appealing to the firm to reverse its decision.

A resolution opposing the closure is set to be proposed at the next meeting of Todmorden Town Council on Wednesday (June 14).

The town lost its branches of TSB in 2020 and Yorkshire Bank in 2017.

Todmorden Mayor Tyler Hanley said: “Many of our residents, especially those that are older and less able-bodied or without IT access, still rely on being able to go to a bank in person.

"It is totally unacceptable to have taken that facility away without proper consultation.

"Because of this decision, residents will have to endure the Calder Valley's heavy traffic, infrequent bus services or expensive train journeys to access their nearest branches in Burnley, Halifax and Rochdale.

“Todmorden prides itself on its unique businesses that enliven the High Street and market. Now, these traders will have to contend with yet another obstacle in an already difficult business environment.

“At the very least, Halifax should commit to sending a representative to the next meeting of Todmorden Town Council.

"It is as though the cost-of-living crisis means nothing to the bank and there is a lot of concern and anger out there which we hope they will acknowledge by listening to our case for the branch remaining open.”
