'It's a terrible tragedy': Police probe into Calderdale library arson attack

Police are investigating an arson attack after a Calderdale library was set alight during the weekend.

Mixenden Library was closed on Saturday after a fire was started inside the building around 1am, causing extensive damage.

The Calderdale Conservative Group have started a petition to put forward to Calderdale Council to save the building from permanent closure.

Stephen Baines MBE, Calderdale Council Conservative group leader, said: "No matter where something like this happens in our community, we need to get together as a council, irrespective of party, and make sure facilities like this are saved.

"It's a terrible tragedy. These facilities are very important to the community.

"We're always endeavouring to save libraries. They are important for community life."

The fire has caused the majority of library stock to be damaged by either smoke or water, including the IT equipment, carpets, furniture and other fixtures.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Susan Press said: “We received the sad news about a break-in and fire at Mixenden Library on Saturday morning.

"Investigations are ongoing, but it’s clear that unfortunately a large amount of damage has occurred.

“Further structural assessments of the building will now take place and the full cost of the damage will be calculated.

“We’re all incredibly upset by the situation, particularly the staff who have worked so hard to turn the library into a real community hub.

“The library has been closed since March due to Covid regulations, but we know how much it is valued. Many members of the local community have already contacted the team to express their sadness about what has happened.”

A police spokeswoman said: "Police in Calderdale are investigating a report of arson at Mixenden Library in the early hours of August 8.

"A fire was started inside the premise at around 12.50am, causing extensive damage.

"An 18-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and has been released under investigation.
