Man in court over death of Halifax Town director

An Elland man has appeared at Calderdale Magistrates’ court on charges relating to the death of FC Halifax Town’s Director of Business Debbie Charlton who died in a car crash.

Ben Hulme, of Exley Lane, appeared in court on the charge of causing death by due care while over the prescribed limit.

The 34-year-old was also charged with causing death by driving a vehicle whilst unlicensed/uninsured.

Mr Hulme, who wore a white shirt and black tie and trousers, spoke only to confirm his name age and address. No pleas were entered.

Mr Hulme was driving Miss Charlton’s Vauxhall Adam along Rochdale Road, Triangle on February 14 at 8.30pm. He was found to have 279 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

He was given conditional bail until his next hearing at Bradford Crown Court on August 13.

Tributes were paid to Miss Charlton, of Wakefield Road, Hipperholme, from the sporting community after her death.

Miss Charlton also held commercial and marketing roles at Bradford Bulls, Leeds Rhinos and Guiseley AFC.
