Shelf-born Frank died in March at the age of 72. He had suffered with dementia over the last five years.

Today – the day of his funeral – a JustGiving fundraising page was launched to raise £5,000 in his memory. Ninety per cent of the donations will go to dementia charities with 10% to his widow.

In an interview Carol revealed that the couple have had financial problems - Frank had previously been declared bankrupt over an unpaid tax bill - and they struggled to pay the mortgage in recent years. Now it is reported she will have to sell their home in Huddersfield.

A funeral service, attended by no more than 30 people due to Covid-19 restrictions, will be held today in Calderdale.

The JustGiving page says: “Following the death of the much-loved footballer Frank Worthington, many friends, former teammates and fans have been keen to support a charity in his name.

“This JustGiving page has been set up to raise money for dementia charities and to help Frank’s widow Carol, who will face financial hardship as she tries to re-build her life.

“Frank was suffering with advanced dementia for the last five years of his life and was cared for at home by Carol with the support of carers.

“This was his wish. Donations from this page will go to help dementia charities and 10% of funds to Carol to help support her into the future.

“Thank you for all the heartfelt tributes to Frank and for your kind donation in his memory.”

Frank played for more than 20 clubs from the mid-60s through to the early 90s and was an England international. His father Eric and brothers Dave and Bob played for Halifax Town.
