The church, which is one of the oldest of its kind in the world, held a programme of events to mark the occasion.

On Saturday, the Yorkshire and Lancashire branches of the Wesley Historical Society enjoyed a talk by Halifax historian John Hargreaves.

Dr Hargreaves’ talk detailed the history of Methodism in the Calder Valley and discussed the pivotal role Heptonstall Methodist Church played in the origins and development of Methodism within the district.

On Saturday evening, visitors enjoyed a concert featuring the Elland Male Voice Choir and members of the Hebden Bridge Brass Band.

The celebrations continued into Sunday as Revd. Kenneth Howcroft, President of the Methodist Conference, delivered a circuit service at the church.

Rev Christine Perry, Minister of Heptonstall Methodist Church, said: “It was very busy and everyone really enjoyed themselves.

“It was a great celebration weekend.”
