Minster to be bathed in candlelight for Christmas

One of Calderdale's oldest and most treasured buildings will be bathed in candlelight to herald Christmas.

Halifax’s ancient and historic Minster will be the backdrop for the special carol service which will tell the story of Jesus’s birth; the ‘Festival of Nine Carols and Lessons’ takes place this Sunday, December 18 at 6.30pm.

The service will be shared by the whole of Halifax as well as people who are too unwell to attend as it will be broadcast live by Phoenix Radio and Calderdale Royal Hospital radio stations.

The lessons will be read by members of the local community including Deputy Lieutenant of West Yorkshire, Virginia Lloyd, Deputy Mayor of Calderdale, Geraldine Carter; MP for Halifax, Holly Lynch and Halifax rotary club president, David Roper.

Music before the service will be performed by Elland Silver Band.

The service starts at 6.30pm prompt and everyone is welcome.

Vicar of Halifax Minster, Rev Canon Hilary Barber said: “This is a lovely service by candlelight with music performed by the Minster choirs, organ and brass featuring traditional carols sung by everyone.
