Homeless people in permanent housing

Inn Churches, based at The Gathering Place, St James Road, Halifax, has been hailed a huge community success.

Over three months, from January to March, 37 homeless men and women out of 43 who used the shelter have secured permanent accommodation through the Christians Together Calderdale project.

Project co-ordinator Jeff Heaton, said: “Homelessness is a hidden problem. If we don’t see people on the streets then it’s easy to pretend it doesn’t happen.

“It’s a misconception that homelessness mainly affects migrants.

“The vast majority of guests we had are people who have born and brought up here and who, for various reasons, have found themselves in difficult times.”

Phil came to Halifax just before Christmas in an attempt to rebuild broken down relationships but unfortunately things didn’t work out.

Phil was referred to Inn Churches. He now has permanent accommodation and a job as a chef.

The project would not have been possible without the overwhelming support of local volunteers. One hundred men and women volunteered their time to support vulnerable men and women visiting the night shelter.

“We cannot thank the volunteers enough for what they have done.

“Without them this project would not be able to operate and many more people would be sleeping on the streets during the coldest months of the year,” said Jeff.

He thanked the various agencies, companies and individuals who have supported people into housing and made donations to the centre.

Calderdale Council Housing Options team and Foundation Housing helped secure housing for previously homeless men and women.
