The council earmarked The Shay as a temporary morgue earlier this year had the number of funerals and cremations in Calderdale exceeded the amount the borough could cope with.

Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Services and Communities, Coun Jenny Lynn, said: “In line with our statutory responsibility to plan for any potential increase in deaths in the borough, the Shay Stadium was fitted out as a temporary storage site earlier this year.

“Thankfully we did not need to use the site and the facility was dismantled and all items returned to suppliers.

“We’re not looking into installing any similar facilities at this time, and very much hope this continues to be the case.

“We can all help protect ourselves, our communities and our loved ones by following the COVID safety guidelines in place.”
