Gatehouse, Kirkless Priory', circa 1910, Kirklees Hall, Calderdale, a 16th-century Grade I listed Jacobean hall said to be the final resting place of Robin Hood. The folklore states that Robin Hood was the nephew of the prioress, who sheltered him when he was fleeing from the Sheriff of Nottingham. From Bibby's Annual 1912, [J. Bibby & Sons, Liverpool, 1912]. Rioting in Salterhebble, Halifax, England, during a labour dispute, 1842. The town was the scene of much rioting during the previous week, which was only quelled by the soldiers clearing the streets at the point of the bayonet. The magistrates had taken every precaution to preserve the peace, by ordering a troop of Lancers and Hussars from Leeds, in addition to which they had the assistance of a part of the 61st regiment of infantry, and a considerable number of special constables. The concourse of people which has been computed at not less than from 15,000 to 20,000, came from the neighbourhood of Bradford, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, and there were some women who had even walked from Oldham. There were at least 5000 from Hebden Bridge; and they entered the town singing the hundredth psalm, the women forming the middle portion of the procession Photo: Hulton Archive
