Saint’s Day honoured

Headed by St George on horseback and a dragon, along with the Clifton and Lightcliffe Brass Band and Poncho the horse - courtesy of Church View Riding School at Coley - the parade consisted of local scouts, guides, cubs and brownies, as well as the Mayor of Calderdale and church representatives.

The parade set off from Central Methodist Church and went around Brighouse town centre through streets packed with onlookers.

In Thornton Square, a mock recreation of St George slaying the dragon was staged, much to the delight of the crowds.

Cub scouts took on the role of the dragon bearers as part of their “Year of Adventure” celebrations in the run-up to next year, which is the centenary for cub scouts.

Scout Amy Eve said: “It was great to have a real horse in the parade.

“I’ve not seen any parade like this before. I really enjoyed being part of it.”

David Burge, District Commissioner for Scouting Brighouse, said: “It was an excellent day. All the hard work showed.”

Rachel Goswell, Assistant Scout Leader, said: “The feedback from the public has been amazing.

“Unfortunately stuff like this can only continue if there are the leaders to do it. It is great fun and everyone gets so much out of it.

“Even if you have only a little spare time to give there are loads of ways to help out. Everyone should consider it.”
