Plans to remember your pooches and feline friends with pet memorial area

The plan has been revealed in a report that will go before the communities scrutiny panel next week.

Calderdale Council’s Director of Communities and Service Support Robin Tuddenham said: “A pet memorial area at Park Wood is being explored – this is currently under discussion with the Environment Agency prior to wider public consultation.”

The report of bereavement services in the borough also shows proposals of providing a municipal burial ground for the Upper Valley.

Land has been acquired at Cornholme and a scheme is being developed / planning permission submitted to ensure there is sufficient burial provision in this area.

The Council’s Bereavement Services provide burial and cremation facilities for the whole of Calderdale from Park Wood Crematorium at Elland and 10 operational cemeteries located throughout the Borough.

Each year, the Council handles well over 2,000 funerals (around 2,100 cremations and 300 burials) and the service is available 24/7 on practically every day of the year for both burial and cremation requirements.

A comprehensive memorial service is available at both the Crematorium and in cemeteries, with a number of products, from benches to roses to ash vaults, being available for people to purchase to remember their loved ones.

The service has responsibility for 30 closed churchyards and cemeteries, and 95,000 monuments and memorials have to be tested on a regular basis to make sure they are safe.
