WATCH: Brave staff and students from Calderdale College take on abseil for Meningitis Now

Over 60 staff and students conquered their fears to abseil 100ft down the side of the Calderdale College Percival Whitley Building, raising money for Meningitis Now through the Lewis Hilton Forever Fund.

Almost £800 was raised on the day through the sponsored abseil, cakes and food stalls, festival face painting and much more.

WATCH: Hear from Gary Barlow fans queuing outside Halifax's Victoria Theatre.. 36 hours before gates open!Craig Smith, Carpentry and Joinery Tutor at the College who arranged the event, said: “I am very proud to be a member of staff at the College and I’m delighted with the level of enthusiasm and support from everybody. The event allowed us to not only raise funds, but we also increased awareness of Meningitis. The money raised and, above all great team spirit, made this a remarkable day in memory of Lewis Hilton.”

Kath Bradwell, Head of Apprenticeships at Calderdale College added: “It was great to see so many staff and students get together to make the event a success, I would like to say a special thank you to Mark Barker and Infinite Outdoors for enabling the abseil to take place and Ian Watkinson, Community Ambassador for Meningitis Now for supporting us.”

IN PICTURES: An evening of glitz and glamour for Hipperholme Grammar studentsPolly Sadlowska, Marketing Officer at the College, abseiled for the first time, said: “I’ve never done anything like this before and getting over the top was the worst bit, but ultimately it was a really rewarding challenge. The students loved it and a few even took the opportunity to get involved themselves. Hopefully it’ll be the first of many charitable events like this at the college as it created a buzz across the campus.”
