Chris Taylor, skipper of the Wakefield Road club, sponsored the challenge match and the battle of the two leagues’ champions, Cleckheaton and Townville, through his Allrounder sports company.

While the Lightcliffe game was completed, the match at Townville was abandoned on a cold, damp afternoon with the hosts 17 without loss after five overs in reply to Cleckheaton’s 169 for nine.

The Walmsley twins, Marcus and Edward, hampered Lightcliffe’s efforts.

Marcus made 55 and Edward 33 not out as Methley made 199 for six in their 40 overs, Luke Patel contributing 37. Spinner Josh Wheatley (four for 33) was the pick of the home bowlers.

Lightcliffe made a promising start to their reply through Taylor (25) and Charlie Roebuck (26) but slipped to 137 all out in the 37th over with Jonny Gardiner taking four for 33 and Patel three for eight.
