Brighouse close in on title

Brighouse Town stayed firmly on course to win the Toolstation NCEL Premier Division crown with a 4-0 success at Long Eaton United yesterday.

It was a fifth success on the bounce for the Hove Edge outfit, who remain one point ahead of Tadcaster Albion having played two games fewer.

Early goals from Tyrone Gay and leading scorer Tom Matthews settled any Town nerves at Long Eaton.

Matthew bagged his second in first half stoppage time and Luke Gibson put further daylight between the teams with 12 minutes left.

Tadcaster won 4-2 at Staveley Miners Welfare but third-placed Barton Town Old Boys were beaten 3-2 at home by Albion Sports.

Brighouse have four games left and two wins will be enough. Their next three games are at home - against bottom side Lincoln Moorland Railway on Tuesday (7.45), Retford United on Saturday (3.0) and Bridlington Town on East Monday (3.0).

Their last match is the return with Bridlington on Saturday, April 26.

Ovenden West Riding are 11 points clear at the top of the West Riding County Amateur League after a 3-0 home win over lowly Hall Green United, Andrew Bailey (two) and Damian Randall getting the goals.

However, Bay Athletic kept up their pursuit with a 4-1 home win over Littletown.

The Huddersfield side have 13 points fewer than Ovenden but have played four games less,
