Bigger field at West End?

Perhaps the unusual Thursday slot didn’t suit players at Dewsbury, where there were some excellent performances from Meltham players in particular.

It is back to a Tuesday at the Halifax club on October 28 and Alliance official Trevor Williams said: “The entry at Dewsbury was well down on what we usually have and we hope for better support at West End.”

This year’s Alliance president is from West End, club pro Darren Arber, who finished joint third in the pro-am section at Dewsbury with general manager Steve Boustead.

Their score of 42 points was respectable but well adrift of the 45 scored by Meltham’s Simon Race and Chris Holmes on 45 points.

But even that was eclipsed by another Meltham combination, Mike Maude and Simon Mourne, who took the am-am honours with a superb 47 points - 11 under par.

After heavy over-night rain the course was wet but with negligible casual water and the greens were soft and receptive. With no wind or rain and some sunshine, target golf was the order of the day and the scoring reflected this.

All the leading duos had very tidy cards with dropped shots rare. The average score was three under par at 39 points.

There were three gross eagles - Luke Pilkington at the drivable par four 15th, John Lawton at the par five 10th and James Ward at the par five 11th.

There were also 14 nett eagles and eagles were recorded on 10 different holes.
