The home side responded well with a try from Alex Milburn and Phil Taylor converted.

A competitive but scrappy game remained 10-8 up to half time, Elland losing Chris Dyson with a knee injury.

Only slowly stretched their advantage with scores from Richard Crawshaw on 45 minutes and Andy Shickell on 53 minutes. Cayci Person and Phil Taylor added the goals.

Merlins were determined and refused to give up, staying in the hunt with points of their own as Elland lost Jack Fairbank and Josh Park to the sin bin.

However, Harnett made the game safe for Elland, whose man of the match was Bradley Ratcliffe.
