Triangle's big guns aiming at Old Town in Parish Cup

The Boston Hill outfit have an ‘appointment with fear’ against a Triangle side from two divisions higher, who are going great guns and have already set a league record total this year.

The addition of wicketkeeper/batsman Chris Metcalf and and return of Carl Fletcher, back from working in Dubai, has given Triangle a formidable line-up of ball strikers.

That was particularly evident in the second of their three Premier Division wins this season when they hit 503 for six at home to Southowram.

Old Town have made a reasonable start in Division Two but the prospect of fielding first on Sunday, paricularly if it is warm, may not be a prospect they would relish.

Triangle cricket chairman John Moore has seen plenty of things in his long time at the Grassy Bottom club but admits he never expected a team to top 500 there. “I thought they might have declared but nobody seems to do that nowadays,” he said.

Moore, who has led Triangle’s seconds to numerous successes, said the club hoped to challenge for major trophies again this year.

The firsts won the Parish Cup in 2015 under Christian Silkstone, who relinquished the leadership during last season to ex-Elland and Warley player Michael Midwood.

Moore said it would be a case of taking it one match at a time and trying to avoid complaceny.

One player Old Town are unlikely to have to worry about is Triangle’s main strike bowler Kurtis Whippey, who works every other weekend.

The onus will be on Liam Turner, Dave Turner, Josh Gledhill and spinner Josh Graham to bowl sides out if Triangle are to mount a title challenge after last season’s fifth-place finish.

Triangle seconds are also strong but opening bowler Richard Turner is out with a broken arm playing rugby.

The cup second round draws will be made at the council meeting at Pellon Club on Tuesday, May 22.
