The Bluebird Care-sponsored team clinched top spot in style with a 49-7 drubbing of Castleford.

They went into the match knowing that 37 points would guarantee winning the Famous Grouse Trophy and fielded a very strong line-up with all but for one of the regular players available.

The home team started well at Greenroyd BC with single figure wins for Brian Winrow and captain Malcolm Griffiths, while Alan Dean had a 21-13 success.

At half time, the news from Pontefract BC was that the sides had registered three wins each with Mick Skwarek posting a 21-13 success and David Wood and John Sharp winning even more handsomely.

Things got even better.

Wins for Ken Fleming, Gordon Bradford, Roy Nicholson and a single figure success for John Rowley produced a 63-chalk home win and victory by 25 points to three.

There were storming successes at Pontefract for David Warburton, Dougie Hamilton, Les Holmes and Trevor Heley, who all won to single figures.
